Sugar Rush: Whoopie Pie From Milk & Cookies

20090828milkandcookieswhoopiepie.jpg

In Cobble Hill, the whoopie pies made by One Girl Cookies is a fine example of a whoopie pie done right. Soft cookie-cakes in flavors of pumpkin and chocolate, with a nicely proportioned fill of cream cheese frosting. In the West Village, Milk & Cookies is an example of a whoopie pie ($3.50) gone horribly wrong. Here the cookies are not cookie-cakes, but overblown chocolate cookies, hard and crunchy. Crunchy in a way that indicates they've been sitting out a bit too long. The cream cheese frosting: gloopy, sugary and dried out at the edges. Combined, they make a horrific pair. Stick to the cookies (the mint chocolate chip is a particular winner), but avoid the whoopie pie at all means.

Oh, the horror!! Still love the ones at Columbine, when they are available. Check the specials, in season soon.

My favorites can be found at Baked in Red Hook. The ones I had from One Girl Cookies were dreadful. They shouldn't have been serving them. I still can't figure out if they were stale or just way overbaked.

If the filling isn't made of shortening, it can't be called Whoopie Pie.

Don't understand the obsession with Whoopie pies anyway!

Totally disgusting!

Where I live (not whoopie pie territory) it's popular for bakeries and grocery stores to offer sandwiches made of two enormous crunchy cookies with a frosting-like filling. Disgusting, but potentially delicious--except for the obvious fact that when you bite into the cookies all the filling gooshes out. That's just one thing that makes a soft whoopie pie so wonderful.

I used to know a wonderful web site that sent them by mail order, but I've lost the URL.

That's a bummer, milk and cookies is usually great. Big fan of their ice cream sandwich and brownie sundae. Ditto on the Baked shout out. Baked has amaaaaaazing everything including whoopie pies.
