Sugar Rush: Chai Zing at Recess

In the space formerly occupied by not-so-great Thai restaurant Spice has opened Recess. The cafe offers abundant seating, glass windows facing out onto University Place, air conditioning on full blast during these hot weeks, and fro-yo on the menu. Fresh baked goods are supplied by Sensible Edibles. I've heard much about the smoothies, but it was the "Chai Zing" ($3) which sounded most intriguing. "The 'zing' comes from the espresso," volunteered the boy behind the counter. The drink was a wake-me-up indeed, coupling both chai and espresso into one chilly concoction. Not too bad at all.

I was ready to run across the Brooklyn Bridge and back after a few sips of this. It's delicious, blending cinnamon, sugar and intense coffee - almost like a Vietnamese iced coffee but with spice. I ordered a small and finished about a fifth before going into sugar overload, but that's just me.
