Breakfast of Champions: Tuck Shop 'Morning Glory' Breakfast Pie

"What's the story, Morning Glory?"

If you are looking for a light breakfast, Tuck Shop is not the place for you. This little Australian pie shop, located on First Street off of First Avenue, serves up what is probably the most calorie-filled, bang-for-your-buck breakfast out there. For a mere $4, you get an open-faced pie crust overflowing with all manner of savory goodness—poached egg, baked beans, bacon, and hash brown potatoes, topped with melted jalapeño jack cheese and a tomato and green pepper sauce.

The crust itself, while lacking the lard of Tuck Shop's other savory pies, is still rich and quite moist; it doesn't crack, so much as crumble, when you take a fork to it. The texture is similar to that of a quiche. The creamy egg and melted cheese, along with the sugary sauce from the baked beans and slightly picante tomato sauce, evoke a deep dish pizza. But the salty, crunchy bacon and potatoes pull the whole pie back into the realm of breakfast.

You probably won't be eating one of these before heading off to yoga—and though it's breakfast, you may well need a nap after consuming one. But it still makes a seriously delicious start to the day.
