End-Of-Day Discounts in New York

Plenty of corner delis and bodegas start slashing prices near the end of the day, trying to offload their goods before closing. But it's always a treat to find a discount somewhere worthwhile, as does Danny at Food in Mouth:

I've always wondered what bakeries do with excess product at the end of the day. When I went to Grandaisy in the Upper West Side, I discovered that if you're lucky, they give you some of the excess, if it's near closing time. I went in to get a piece of pizza bianca, and came out with that and a little tart looking thing [pictured above].

I'd take a Grandaisy pastry over a half-price sandwich any day. Any other notable end-of-day discounts (or freebies) around town?

Most Chinese bakeries have a standing discount after 6 or so. My most recent experience was $1.25 for any 3 buns. Sometimes, the signs are in chinese, though, so it might not be well advertised.

Au Bon Pain in Union Square has 1/2 price on baked goods an hour before closing.

Cafe Zaiya has 1/2 price off of bread and "real food" before closing as well. It doesn't apply to their pastries, however.

Enjuu has 1/2 price sushi before closing, and the sushi line forms conveniently alongside the ice cream container... ;)

Buttercup Bakeshop usually has a 2 for 1 sale of their muffins and banana bread just before closing.

pignoli tart - to die for!!

Everything at Balthasar's bakery is 1/2 off after 7PM. Same deal at Silver Moon Bakery on the UWS...delicious!

@yasmina,
wow, half off at Balthasar's bakery after 7pm?! I am there!

Fatwitch in Chelsea Market has their "witching hour" from 5-7 PM (I believe) when any unwrapped brownie is 50% off. Warning-- they're decadently rich.

news bar on university place sells its sandwiches for half off after 7.

birdbath bakery on 1st ave just south of 14th st will often throw in an extra cookie or two near closing.
