Is West Village Joe Jr's About To Be History?

Photographs by Robyn Lee
This just in from United States of Arugula author and serious eater David Kamp:
Ed,
HELP! Just walked past Joe Jr's, my beloved local greasy spoon [Kamp is very fond of greasy spoons. —Ed], and they have big handwritten signs in the window saying they've lost their lease after 35 yrs. They are asking people to sign a petition to save Joe Jr. and to "spread the word," I guess in hopes of pressuring the landlord not to cut them loose.
Could Joe Jr's really be history? Say it ain't so, Joe! Where will hungover serious eaters who live in Greenwich Village go to recuperate?

Oh nooooo! Where does one find this petition. We're going there for lunch pronto! I'm going to get a hangover just so I can go there!

Don't hate me, but I was kind of grossed out eating there! It was a little too greasy of a spoon for my taste.... BUT, for those of you who love it, I feel your hearts breaking. That's awful when we lose an institution

agree with meem --not sure what the fuss is about. sometimes things aren't worth saving JUST because they're old...

@frontstudio and pickle: Just updated this post with photos; there's a petition inside the restaurant!

Thanks for the post, Ed. Regarding the comment of “mh330,” it’s not a matter of overromanticizing a shabby place that's just hung on too long. (I know what you mean in that regard and can think of some places that fit that description.) The point is, Joe Jr's is still good and still thriving, a real “heart of the community” kind of place. I couldn't see it shuttered and rightly think, “Well, it was time.”

Crap crap crap!
I love this place. Had many hangover curing burgers there.
A good simple diner burger, and great chicken noodle soup to boot!

My kids call Joe's our living room—the people there are part of our family. And the split pea soup with homemade croutons? Amazing (but only on Mondays and Saturdays).

here we go again loosing another great hangout in the village .it one of the old time village places left where the average person and the celebrities of the area hang hang out together.its not just the food its the people who work there .I heard on NY1 the landlord is blaming them for a fire in the basment of the building and he want then to pay for all the repairs. Joe Jr said they have nothing to do with the fire that happened

Call the landlords, Saul (Sol?) Luso at 973-785-4088.
Call Christine Quinn, Mayor Bloomberg, Tom Duane, Deborah Glick — anyone you can think of.
Residents of Greenwich Village need to stop this from happening!

Sad I guess but the bottom line is that it was a greasy spoon. What I still miss is the departure of EJ's Luncheonette a few blocks down. The same outstanding food you'd get at expensive restaurants for half the price. Wish they'd come back...
