Pumpkin Pancakes at Café Orlin

I'm all for seasonal eats, but pumpkin treats are just too good to confine to October. Thankfully, Café Orlin shares my sensibilities: the pumpkin pancakes are on the menu year-round. The best of their kind? Not quite; the four orange cakes are incredibly hefty, each with a dense, gooey interior—approaching that of a pumpkin bread. They arrive smothered in a thin cinnamon yogurt sauce. It's good enough to eat with a spoon, though better to let soak into the pancakes: underspiced and heavy on their own, they soften and grow much tastier as the sweet, creamy sauce creeps in.
While throngs descend on this East Village café for weekend brunch, the pancakes turn up on the weekday breakfast menu, too, served Monday through Friday until 4 p.m. For $6.75, it's an impressive stack of breakfast. And if you're looking for a more well-balanced meal, try the breakfast special: two eggs, home fries, toast, fresh orange juice, and a decent cappuccino--for a cool six bucks. For breakfast on an East Village patio, that's about as good a deal as you'll get.
