Picture the climactic ballroom scene in Cinderella, except instead of gowns, the recommended attire includes stingers, wings, and black stripes. That's what you might expect for the First Annual Beekeepers Ball on Monday, June 22, at the South Street Seaport Water Taxi Beach. Just Food, a New York non-profit focused on local and sustainable food, has organized the soiree in conjunction with Pollinator Week, June 22 to 28, an effort to raise awareness about honeybees and legalizing beekeeping in New York City.
Tickets correspond to different donation amounts. The cheapest are $25, which includes a honey-infused cocktail and all-you-can-eat honey-laced treats. If you really want to take one for the hive, go for the Queen Bee tickets ($75), which tacks on a $50 tax deductible donation. Of course, it wouldn't be a beekeepers ball without costumes. Come dressed as your favorite member of the colony: queen (fertile female), worker (fertile male), or drone (sterile female). Or if you'd rather go for the classic beekeepers look (aka less effort), all-white will work.
