Jane and Michael Stern's Four Must-Eat Foods in NYC

Bialy from Kossar's Bialys.

Jane and Michael Stern, creators of the Roadfood forum, have co-authored 43 books on food across the country and the newest one comes out today: 500 Things To Eat Before It’s Too Late. “New York is the hardest to write about,” Jane Stern told amNY. “It’s a bouillon cube of road food. You could spend a lifetime on one block.”

But if they had to pick four foods, they'd be: pizza at Patsy’s, gribenes (basically kosher pork rinds) at the Second Avenue Deli, New England clam chowder at Pearl Oyster Bar, and bialys at Kossar’s Bialys.

That's all they could come up with? In NYC? Come on.

pizza at Patsy's, of all places?!? It's not bad but not the best....

Well... no. By definition that's not all they could come up with. I'd think "You could spend a lifetime on one block" makes that pretty clear. It's not even a Top Four, just the four they thought right then. Ask again later and you'd probably get a different four.

New England clam chowder at Pearl Oyster Bar? In a world where the Maine Diner in Wells still exists?

The Sterns should know better.

These posts are ridiculous, they always stir up controversy. The best place to eat is the place you like the best, forget these self-proclaimed experts.

i love kossar's bialy's .... but i hope they're not changing their recipe around like everyone else.... i picked up a bag at zabars a few weeks ago and they were dull and lifeless, even after toasting.....

this does seem like a strange list. we should really take them on a new tour of nyc. i love their posts especially on the splendid table where they always seem to be right on -- granted i cannot really go check out what they're writing about -- but the pizza suggestion above definitely seems off.

at the risk of being labeled a heretic, i think kossar's is only okay. i find them to be about on par (though slightly different from) the bialy's carried by my local supermarket (which are surprisingly good). my favorite bialy is far and away from slim's.
