Sugar Rush: Yogurt, Uvetta, and Mandorla Gelato at Grom

"I would never think of pairing these three flavors together, but somehow it works."

20090512gromint.jpgWhile all of the flavors on Grom's regular roster are outstanding, it's always nice to mix things up. The featured flavor for May at this venerable gelato parlor is Yogurt, Uvetta, and Mandorla: Italian yogurt studded with raisins and Sicilian almond chips. The yogurt base is intensely creamy but still refreshing, its texture much closer to a traditional gelato than any airy soft-serve. Its tang is tamed with tiny flecks of nuts and the rare, juicy golden raisin. I would never think of pairing these three flavors together, but somehow it works. Like granola-topped yogurt, without the oaty bits. In any event, it’s a refreshing almost-summer treat.
