Book Giveaway: 'Clean Plates NYC'

20090507-cleanplatesnyc.jpgIt's good to know which restaurants serve food on thoroughly scrubbed plates (but that's not what this book is all about). Clean Plates NYC is a guide to healthy eateries in Manhattan that skip chemicals and GMOs to serve locally-raised veggies, hormone-free beef, and other feel-good foods.

Coauthors Jared Koch (the nutritionist) and Alex Van Buren (the food critic) include everything from Chipotle ("the burrito chain we need not feel guilty about loving") to Eleven Madison Park ("the only thing missing is a sugarless dessert").

We have five (5) copies of Clean Plates NYC to give away—which, by the way, comes in a nice, lightweight size (comparable to a Moleskine) with rounded edges. Just tell us your favorite place to grab a healthy meal. We'll pick five commenters at random.

Comments here will close at 3 p.m. ET on Monday, May 15. One entry per community member. The standard Serious Eats contest rules apply.

The Amish Market, Hell's Kitchen, or Beyoglu

Get Fresh (in Park Slope) ... an apparent darling of Serious Eats

Atlas in the east village

Souen at Union Square

'wichcraft is my go to for healthy, easy lunches

Mooncake Foods has some healthy, yummy things to eat!

Big Wong -- their poached chicken and rice, with the scallion and ginger sauce and a tiny bit of soy. They've always got some nice seasonal greens that you can just ask them to sauté and serve as a side, or have as another accompaniment to your rice.

Still a sucker for Energy Kitchen and Pump. Like that they post the nutritional information.

Viva Herbal Pizza is nice.

If we're not worried about price, I'm going Sushi Yasuda; if we are, bite or freefoods are better options, though less of sit-down experiences

maoz falalfel or salad bar at whole foods

gotta love 'snice in either the west village or park slope.

lifethyme market on 6th avenue has an amazing deli in the back full of healthy and really tasty prepared food

Bonobo's across from Shake Shack. so fresh and so clean clean

I like going to Atlas Cafe in the East Village. Cheap and healthy vegan eats that even non-vegans like myself can enjoy.

Gobo, and any really good sushi place.

Gotta love a picnic of fresh greenmarket bread, cheese, fruit and veggies eaten on a sunny day in the park

Before the fire it was Community Food & Juice. Crossing my fingers the renovation won't take too long :-(...

Another Gobo fan here! It's close, and while not cheap, the food is comparable to what I'd cook for myself or someone I love. i.e. cleanly flavoured, healthy, not fussy.

Freefoodsnyc. They do pretty cool things with raw foods!

Sweet Tomatoes.

my kitchen. i don't eat out all that often so i don't really worry about being healthy when i do. of course i'm sure i'd change that if i had a book that would point me in the right direction....

I love Quartino Organica this time of year, when the front doors are pushed open and the back area is open.

Ariyoshi Izakaya for small bites.

Homecooked meal. I get to control the quality of the ingredients and the sodium level.

Temple in the Village on W. 3rd

I always go to Whole Foods. I love the salad bar and I like knowing that most, if not all, of the food, is healthy and fresh!

Taim in the West Village! Or Maoz.

same as gargupie - what I make at home is my best healthy food place! a little napa cabbage stirfried with some shiitake mushrooms, a tiny bit of oyster sauce, soy sauce, and some carrots. Top with a little fried garlic and some sambal oelek (any red hot sauce). So delicious!

Weaver Street Market

Souen in Union Square! One planet platter with a side of miso tahini sauce and you're well on your way to delicious [and super healthy] town.

If price is no option, Caravan of Dreams in the East Village is fabulous

Broadway East - absolutely delicious, not pretentious, always local and fresh and easy on the wallet.

angelica's in the east village. the only vegan place i truly enjoy.

Energy Kitchen. The bison cheesesteak wrap is yummy and healthy.

Sido on Amsterdam north of 79th. Awesome Falafel and other Middle Eastern fare!

Community Food and Juice on 113th and Broadway

I like Candle 79 as well, the desserts there are amazing! (oh wait, does that count as healthy??) I also enjoy the Pump near my office despite the crazy long lines.

Organic Avenue for some yummy juice!

The salads at guy and gallard are pretty tasty.

For a healthy meal, I love to go to Sacred Chow. I'm not a vegan or a vegetarian, but when I feel like I need to detox, I waddle over there.
