Sugar Rush: Soft Serve at Baoguette

Jasmine and pandan soft serve

At the newest Baoguette location on St. Mark's Place, the banh mi and Vietnamese soup speckled menu features a rather exciting dessert selection of, get ready for it, soft serve. Current flavors include jasmine and pandan. The menu also lists durian, though it wasn't available the day we visited.

Pandan proved to be a fine silky number, delicate in taste with just the slightest fragrance. Think vanilla meets coconut with the barest hint of nuttiness. Unfortunately the jasmine—gummy, gritty and overly sweet—didn't fare as well. Topping options? Drizzles of condensed milk and dulce de leche. How lucky we are in the East Village: vanilla bean soft serve at ChickaLicious, rotating flavors at Momofuku Milk bar (like the doughnut lineup right now), and now Asian-inspired ones at Baoguette.

the green tea soft serve they had at bam was one of the reasons i would set foot on that street (the other being chipotle when it was still a new thing and NYU gave out free burrito coupons). now i have reason to go again! excited!

Any word on when the Baogette will open on Christopher St.?

For some reason pandan-flavored stuff kinda reminds me of bread pudding...sorry to hear they didn't have durian that day ...I'm dying to try it!

Gasp! Pandan and jasmine are two of my favorite flavors! Too bad that the jasmine wasn't that great. I'll pass on the durian.

The pandan was incredibly rich, and even with the generous helping I got, it didn't sit heavy on my stomach. Really good, probably my favorite soft service in the city right now! I got to sample a bit of the jasmine as well, and I loved that it wasn't too sweet, with a touch of "flowery" aftertaste. Yum!

i'll stick with momofuku doughnut...

Are they planning on adding the soft serve to the other locations?

Is it fair to say soft serve is a perfectly acceptable dairy option in the food pyramid? I.e. If I have Momofuku soft serve with a cookie, there's a wee bit of nutritional value??

I know this is off topic, but I want to the St. Mark's location the other day, and the bahn mi was substandard! They forgot the pickled carrot and daikon, the ingredients were unevenly spread, and the bread, which was cut from a larger baguette, was stale and too chewy; not comparable at all to the mini, warmed baguettes at the Lexington location. I'll continue going to the Lexington branch (the original!) until they get it right at the St. Marks (although I don't know how I'll know that!)>

I just went and it was exactly what I needed—thanks for makin my night SE!

Thanks for the soft-serve coverage, Kathy.
