Breakfast Sandwiches at Maoz: Love The Pitas, Hate The Name

Here at Serious Eats, we’re all about international incarnations of the breakfast sandwich—be they burritos, panini, or something else entirely. Which is why we were so excited to hear about the line of breakfast pitas at Maoz on Union Square.

While Maoz’s oatmeal wasn’t too thrilling, we sure did love their falafel—and hoped that their “Eggetarian Sandwiches,” cringe-worthy name aside, would be just as good.

20090225maoz3.jpgAnd they didn’t disappoint. From 7:30 to 11 a.m. daily, Maoz piles quick-fried eggs and other goodies into thick, fluffy pitas, with happy results. This “Eggstreme” sandwich (again, we didn’t name it) is like a re-imagined shakshuka: tangy stewed tomatoes, peppers and onions atop two fried eggs, stuffed into a still-warm pita.

Also on the menu: a sabich-like sandwich with eggplant, hard-boiled egg and hummus; a pita with scrambled eggs plus tomato, cucumber, red onion, olive and feta; and a yolkless version of any of the above. Costing between $4.25 and $5.15, with coffee for an additional buck, they’re only a few cents more than the oatmeal—perfect for those times when all you need is a protein fix. And a little bit of spice.
