Crunchiest Drinking Snack Ever: Kanikko, Tiny Japanese Crabs

Cute food doesn't usually do it for me. The sole exception: images of cute animals engaging in cannibalism, like this gigantic crab on this bag of kanikko who is gleefully devouring his thumb-sized brothers and sisters. I like to think of him as some Godzilla-like monster at the manufacturer who's actually scooping them into the package whilst eating a few here and there.
I caught my baby crabs at Sakura-ya, a Japanese grocery in Forest Hills, Queens. As soon as I walked in and saw a row of bags emblazoned with that big googly-eyed fella, I knew I’d be walking out with one. It wasn’t my first experience with these salty, sweet, almost painfully crunchy treats. Years ago I bought some from Aji Ichiban in Manhattan's Chinatown and placed them in a bowl on my desk at work. What can I say, some people like offering co-workers butterscotch candies and some like messing with ’em.

As with many Japanese snacks that combine salty, fishy and sweet, kanniko are a drinking snack. So I chose the finest, and largest, Japanese beer I could find. They went great with beer though I think sake or shochu would better complement the concentrated crabbiness. The remainder of the bag is being reserved as a sake snack, as it’s one of the ingredients. In case anyone’s wondering, yes, a stray piece of crab fell into that silo of beer during the photo shoot.
Not willing to come to Queens for candied crustaceans? They’re also available at Sunrise Mart—albeit in smaller, less festive packaging—and surely other Asian markets across the country.

Oh man, these little guys are TASTY! I keep these and sembei (rice snack crackers) on hand at all times.
I agree that they are good with a glass of cold beer. I will have to give them a whirl with sake or shochu.

What's the inside of the body like? Any mushiness?

Whoa. I know that at least some small part of me should be repulsed by eating sugar coated crabs whole, but i just can't find that part of me right now. I must have these and i must share them with friends. NOW.

@DanielJ: no mushiness whatsoever, pure crunch

As you can see these little suckers contain a boatload of sodium and calcium. I think the sugar data is way off though, since sugar's listed as the second ingredient.

JOOOE I THOUGHT THE SAME THING!! I had to buy it immediately when I went to Mitsuwa a while back (photo). But it was less for the snack, more for the best packaging ever. As for the crabs themselves, I feel like they'd be tasty crushed up and used as a topping, but on their own they're kinda meh. Then again, I didn't eat them with beer.

OMG. So good! I've only had these from Shirokiya in Honolulu and didn't even think about trying to track it down in NY. I feel foolish now.

My Japanese friend ordered takowasabi at decibel over the weekend. It's basically salty slime with little bits of octopus, and she says it's a popular drinking snack. One taste was enough -- not for me. The crabs look interesting.

so are these crab shaped rice crackers or actual fried crunchy crabs?

I walked by an Aji Ichiban on Mott and they had samples of all the snacks including this crab one. Not so bad. Not sure if I can eat alot of it on it's own. Probably need a few beers to compliment it.

Hmart on 32nd street has a banchan version of these little guys in a spicy sauce. Grosses out my BF, but it's good.

i found this same large package at the m2m market on 3rd ave and 11th, around the corner from sunrise. looking forward to the cold beer accompaniment, because they are so strong on their own.
