Eat Oysters And Support New Amsterdam Market

20090208tinyoyster.jpgNonprofit New Amsterdam Public Market Association has spent the last few years petitioning the city to protect the now-vacant Fulton Fish Market and establish a year-round, indoor public market of food vendors and purveyors. While Robert LaValva and New Amsterdam have already held several market meetings to rally support, they're now hoping to make the market a monthly event. To raise the necessary funds, New Amsterdam is holding the event Founded On Oyster Shells this Saturday, February 21, at the f/ocus Rental Gallery in Hell's Kitchen. Tickets start at $50 and will win you: beer from Kelso of Brooklyn; bread made from Kelso's spent grains, by Rhonda Crosson; a hearty crock of fish stew, from Ross Gill of Home Restaurant; fresh-made pickles and kraut; and seven oysters from Widow's Hole Oyster Company, Norm Bloom and Son, and other local oyster farmers. Larger donations earn more oysters. Tickets available here.
