Sugar Rush: Baby Watson Cheesecake from D'Aiuto's Pastry Corporation

No food styling was involved in this photo. Sorry.
Right across from Penn Station, D'Aiuto's Pastry Corporation has that old-timey New York facade that makes you want it to be good. Unfortunately, the danishes, fritters, pies, and Italian ices (during the summer) all kind of suck. The Baby Watson cheesecakes however, good. Maybe not worth missing your train good, but good.
Crustless, this one is pretty intense on the creamy meter. Thankfully it's still light—somewhere between a pudding and mousse. Our Michele Humes brought home cake leftovers recently: "I ate an inch of it for breakfast every day for the next seven days. By day five, it was hardening on the outside so I'd just scoop out the cheesy innards with a spoon." So, apparently the shelf life is good too.
Order ranging sizes ahead of time, or just grab one of the 7-inch round cakes ($14) in the fridge if they're not sold-out. Until Valentine's Day they'll have smaller heart-shaped cheesecakes (less than half the size) for $7.95. "The bigger one is a much better deal." The cashier wasn't afraid to un-glorify the sentimental shape.

The Baby Watson pictured is my seven-days-of-breakfast Baby Watson! Oh, how I miss thee, Baby Watson, with your texture of room temperature butter.

Huh? The fritters do not suck in any way. Their apple fritters are awesome. And weight, I might add, probably two pounds. Their donuts are very good as well.

Hey! Their ices are good. And so are their cookies. And the chocolate mouse cake!

I realize that the ices are not the type your used to, like zucchini olive oil or anchovy passion fruit. But for those of who still enjoy a pedestrian lemon, cherry or chocolate it is a very good ice, very refreshing on a sweltering summer day served up by a friendly person.
And the hard rolls are great too.

I've tried their cookies and few times, and I can't recommend them for those items. The cookies on two repeat visits at around 5 pm tasted stale. I wasn't happy with the quality.
