Sugar Rush: Morir Soñando from Reben Luncheonette

20090127-morirsonando.jpg

If a restaurant features the name of a drink on their awning, it's probably pretty good. Reben Luncheonette in Williamsburg displays the name Morir Soñando on their awning and in a neon sign in their window. What could a drink that translates to "die dreaming" be made of? It's a simple combination of orange juice, evaporated milk, sugar, and ice cubes. Think "orange creamsicle" in drinkable form. The large metal tumbler and blocky ice cubes kept the drink refreshingly chilled.

Seems like you have to source/credit Jim Leff if you're going to post about this place. It's not a new discovery by any means, pretty well known as one of his ur-finds.

(You also have a misspelling in the post title.)

@Jack_Barber: Thanks for the correction.

I didn't read about this from Jim; I used to live a short walk away from Reben and passed it all the time. I wouldn't say the drink is a new discovery, we just hadn't posted about it on this site before.

@Jack_Barbed : Everyone makes their own "discoveries". If only one person could "discover" somewhere, it's unlikely anywhere would stay in business long.

We can definitely agree that it's a delicious beverage.

Although for health reasons I have to ask for "light sugar" and I try to alternate with carrot/orange juice (which is not quite as transporting as the morir).

Great point Tim -- thanks!

@Jack_Barber: That makes me want to try a morir sonando with carrot juice instead of orange. Hmmm...

I think you would lose the creamsicle effect -- but that it would be tasty...

this is super easy to make at home. i usually make it with whole milk, as i don't often have evaporated milk on hand. just put oj, ice, and sugar in a shaker... shake.. add milk... shake again. i would say the ratio of milk to oj is about twice as much oj as milk, but i usually just do it to taste, sometimes more milk sometimes less.

Another twist on this Dominican Fave is to use Lime Juice..yes, Lime Juice! No your drink wont curdle and turn to cheese if you put the juice first, then sugar, then ice....lastly add the milk. Wouldnt hurt to also make the Morir Soñando with VitaSoy or Silk Soymilk.

¡Buen Provecho!

I'm visiting the Lower East Side from Los Angeles today and somebody told me about it so I hopped the train one stop to give it a try. It was totally refreshing although I couldn't help but wonder what this drink would be like with some seltzer water in it - like a Dominican version of an Egg Cream.
