BBQ Chicken Chelsea, Home of the Colpop, Has Closed

Posted by Adam Kuban, January 6, 2009

20090106-colpopfail.jpgIt seems that not even the staggering amount of PR that came in the wake of Colpop meme was enough to keep BBQ Chicken in Chelsea open.

You may remember it as the location that Serious Eats discovered the novel food-and-drink container (nuggets on top, soda in the bottom). Eater brings word of its demise.

Take heart, though, the East Village location, on Saint Marks between Second and Third avenues, is still open and, presumably, still sending awesome snack containers into the world at large.

At one point, BBQ Chicken, a South Korea-based chain, hoped to open 50,000 locations worldwide (McDonald's has around 30,000 globally). This does not bode well. BBQ has some great chicken, so maybe this was just a hiccup with that location, which was kind of weird—it really had some strange feng shui.
