'Man vs. Food' to Visit Brick Lane, Curry House, Sylvia's, Katz's Deli

Will Adam Richman (top) beat the Phaal Curry Challenge at Brick Lane Curry House (above)? Former Serious Eats intern Emily Koh did just that.
On tomorrow night's episode of Man vs. Food, Adam Richman visits New York, heading to the following:
Sylvia's: 328 Lenox Avenue, New York NY 10027 (map); 212-996-0660; sylviassoulfoud.com
Katz's Deli: 205 East Houston Street, New York NY 10002 (map); 212-254-2246; katzdeli.com
Brick Lane Curry House: 306-308 East 6th Street, New York NY 10003 (map); 212-979-8787; bricklanecurryhouse.com
The challenge will involve the phaal curry at Brick Lane, which the show describes as "the hottest curry in the country." Former Serious Eats intern Emily Koh took the challenge and beat it, so you better bring your A game, Richman.
We've got a promo of the show here, after the jump. [via EatFeats]
Episode airs Wednesday, January 21, on the Travel Channel at 10 p.m. ET; check your local listings for channel.

After watching Adam down those incendiary ghost chili chicken wings in an earlier episode, I think he'll handle this dish!

What's the food challenge at Katz's?
JudgeFudge at 2:33PM on 01/20/09
there is usually only one challenge per episode so i would guess that he's just checking out the food at katz's (the usual format of the show is that he eats at a couple of non-challenge places at the beginning and does a challenge at the end.)

This is the absolutely dumbest show on TV. I watched an episode or two before turning it off for good. What's the point of showing folks how much you can eat or how hot or whatever?
paulf at 2:54PM on 01/20/09
@paulf I think the purpose is to showcase eateries around the country that serve huge, gluttonous, American-sized portions of delicious food.
chefimpostor at 3:10PM on 01/20/09
@sloppy: Thanks. Yeah. That's the format. A pastrami "sandwich" (read: a humongo stack of meat with a couple thin slices of bread -- rye, please) at Katz's is almost a challenge in and of itself. For reference as to size of Jewish deli pastrami sandwiches, see this post, where Erin and Ed make four normal-sized sandwiches out of one Carnegie Deli "sandwich."
The point of the show is, I suppose, to draw viewers interested in the BIGGEST, HOTTEST, MOST EXTREME food out there. If there's an audience for it (and there is), rest assured TV will craft a show around it.

The phaal was hot, but not mind meltingly redonkulous. Our waiter said me and my compatriot were the 193rd and 194th people to finish it. I find it really hard to believe that the #s are so low.
zackola at 4:12PM on 01/20/09
Say what you will about the concept of this show, but the host is perfectly suited to it. He's very affable, and its not painful or disgusting to watch him down all this stuff.
JudgeFudge at 4:54PM on 01/20/09
this might be unrelated BUT... my memory of Katz's is this: We took about 30 8th graders there (after the tenement museum) where we had okay'ed a reservation for us and they still gave us some sh*t that some kids brought their lunch (this had been okay'ed on the phone). Yes, they had great corned beef, but it was still a semi-hostile environment. If that means anything to you, good luck!

Holy crap am I in love with Adam Richman. Voracious eaters are sexy.

Man v Food is shockingly good!
Best new American Food show in the past couple years.
Best new UK Food show? Supersizers Go.
Pity they don't show it in the USA.

*Please* don't promote this show. The last thing this world needs right now is a celebration of gluttony.
And as if we don't have enough 'Let's visit diners and orgasmically worship their food' shows? At least all the other ones move quickly and highlight interesting dishes and have some scintilla of educational value.
Man vs. Food is shallow, wasteful trash.

I ordered the phaal at Brick Lane and didn't finish it. Not because it was too hot but because it didn't taste good. It just tasted of chilis and otherwise was quite bland. I would rather eat a bowl of sriracha which at least has tangy, sweet, and salty flavors to go with the heat. My friends ordered other curries which were very good and they shared with me, so I left some phaal on the plate and paid for my own beer.
hsawtelle at 11:21AM on 01/21/09
I just had the phaal today, with a friend. We both managed to finish, although in some pain.
I disagree about the phaal being bland, actually. I thought the flavor, beneath the heat, was actually quite fine. :)
NickP: lighten up.

Yeah! I want even more celebrations of gluttony! I'd like to see one where Adam Whathisfatass takes the "spray a whole can of mace down your throat" challenge!
Even more revolting than Man Against Food was a show that I came in on late so didn't catch the name, but it was something like "World's 10 Biggest Pig-Outs",another great example of the American tendency to ignore quality for sheer quantity - an indication of a pathetically adolescent society and a cohort lack of taste...Doesn't do much for our justifiably bad reputation overseas in so many ways, one of which is our gluttony.

What a ridiculous show! Gluttony and waste, 2 great qualities of us Americans. It's embarrassing.
