Sugar Rush: Vanilla Malted Milkshake at Black Iron Burger Shop

20081209-milkshake.jpg

Over an evening meal with friends at Black Iron Burger Shop, we agreed that the burger was subpar, the fries were pretty awesome, the grilled cheese was even better, and the vanilla malted milkshake: nothing short of spectacular.

With chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry flavors on the lineup, I naturally went for the chocolate at first, though we settled on the vanilla in an attempt to recover from chocolate overdose (after weekend research for Erin's 12 Days of Hot Chocolate coverage). The vanilla bean-studded milkshake is a wonderful creation—full bodied, lush, and not achingly sweet. It's thick enough to require a decent effort when sucking though the thin straw, but not so much that your cheeks will ache upon polishing off the shake.

When we asked about the brand of ice cream, the most they offered was, "We have a local restaurant make it especially for us." Curious, curious. The malt accent doesn't mark a noticeable presence, but with a shake this good, I didn't miss it at all. On my next visit, I'm making a complete meal of fries and shake. Why not?

One thing we forgot to try... the grilled cheese dipped in the milkshake! Also it's nice to see my blurry self so delicately present in the background.

Everyone be warned, this place requires PLENTY of napkins... even for just a milkshake. You end up drinking it so fast because it tastes so good and then you drip it on your clothes!

AHT/SE is really obsessing over this place considering that none of you seem to like their burgers..this must be the fifth or sixth post I've seen about it.

@sloppy: I never got the impression that we "obsessed" over BIB; this was the first visit for me, Kathy, and our two friends who ate with us. Even though we weren't in love with the burger, some other things are worth recommending, like this DELICIOUS MILKSHAKE!!

got it. i do appreciate the shake rec since it's tough to beat a good shake (though i doubt i will ever try it..that would involve leaving brooklyn), i just felt like i was seeing a new mention of how the burger just isn't that good every day or two. i hate when other people criticize the content of blogs so i'm gonna follow my own rule and pipe down now....

@sloppy: Nothing wrong with critiquing as long as it's useful and not just silly ^_^ If you do make it out of Brooklyn, we'd love to hear what you think of the shake!

Why does SE keep dissing on BIB? Their burgers are GOOD. Not the best i've had, sure, but a lot more than passable and certainly better than average. I would go out of my way for their burger.
