Have you ever actually seen someone eat a fruitcake? Want to make up for lost time and watch professional eater Takeru Kobayashi stuff as many as he can into his mouth over ten minutes? The man already holds records for hot dogs, noodles, rice, and cow brains, but it'd be nice to hang the fruitcake medal over the mantel.

Kobayashi will attempt to beat the current fruitcake record-holder Sonya "the Black Widow" Thomas, who ate 4 pounds 14.25 ounces in 10 minutes in 2001. Watch on Friday, December 26 at 11 a.m. at the plaza of Madison Square Garden, 34th Street and Seventh Avenue, Manhattan (map). [via City Room]

I like well-made fruitcake, and will only consume it for pleasure, not a competition.

The fruitcake looks more like it's being interviewed on "Inside the Actor's Studio."

As I tend to fall into the category with those who occasionally enjoy the most-loathed holiday food traditions (candy corn, black jelly beans and now, fruitcake), I like fruitcake, but only one particular recipe. Nothing says Christmas like synthetic-tasting candied cherries and citron enmeshed in spicy cake. LOL

I could of sworn Joey Chestnut smashed his record and is now the current record holder...no?

Damn! It's times like these that I wish I lived in New York :)

@KingT
You echoed my thoughts exactly.

yeah, Joey Chestnut is the hotdog king now. Not the others, as far as I know.

Are they going to be broadcasting this on tv? I'd like to see it, as I'll be holed up at my parents' house with nothing better to do.

Is Kobayashi unhinging his jaw in that picture?

The article just says "holds records for" not "holds THE record for".

Well feriorrena, everyone technically holds some record for everything. It might not be an impressive record if you're 134325643th for hot dog eating, but it's still a sort of record. Even without using "the", it still reads to me as saying he's the one that's eaten the most of those things.
