12 Days of Hot Chocolate: Grom

Editor's note: For the next twelve weekdays until Christmas, we'll have a hot chocolate report for you. 'Tis the season. Today, we start with the gelateria Grom.

Price: $5.00 for a regular (12 ounces), $6.50 for a large (16 ounces), $0.50 extra for whipped cream

The deal: There's no hot water or milk added to this one. It's purely melted chocolate—a mix of Bolivian and Venezuelan. Dark chocolate people will like the bitterness, which almost borders on a roasted coffee bean flavor. And about as exciting as the drink itself is the whipped cream. Yeah, we had to get an extra plastic cup-ful. Fresh made inhouse, it's some some serious white fluff. Thick, barely sweetened, and totally worth the extra two quarters.

Best Whipped Cream. Ever!! Next time we're ordering a large cup of just whipped cream with a little hot chocolate drizzled over :)

you're totally speaking my language... when i lived in berkeley, the staff at my favorite dessert place always knew what my order would be: whipped cream with a slice of chocolate pie.

@Kathy: I like the way you think! :)

Oh wow, you guys... I'm looking forward to the next 11 days.

pure melted chocolate like ganache (with cream added), or pure melted chocolate like a melted chocolate bar, plain?

I can't quite figure out how "no hot water or milk added" works. . .

whoa. no milk nor hot water.

@emisara: I just called and it's not ganache or a bar. Just melted broken-up pieces of Italian chocolate.

who, i cannot imagine drinking 12 oz of melted chocolate!
