12 Days of Hot Chocolate: Dunkin' Donuts

Editor's note: This is part of the 12 Days of Hot Chocolate series over on Serious Eats: New York. Every weekday until Christmas, we're reporting on a different hot chocolate in New York City. 'Tis the season. Today, Dunkin' Donuts, which we thought could apply to non-New Yorkers too!

Price: $1.59 for a small (10 oz.) hot chocolate, peaking at $2.39 for an extra-large (24 ounces)

The deal: Before you start pelting me with stale donuts for including Dunkin' in our hot chocolate round-up, hear me out. These days, the more you pay for a cup of hot chocolate, the more it seems to resemble a liquefied chocolate bar. And while this is all well and good for the card-carrying chocoholics out there, some of us prefer a thinner, milkier cocoa that doesn't demand an entire bottle of water as a chaser. This is the Dunkin' Donuts niche.

Tasting notes: Chocolate flavor is somewhat muted; malty, smoky—dare I say bacon-y?—notes dominate. Medium-bodied; long, faintly artificial finish. Curiously delicious.

Ambience: None, but you already knew that. Get it to go.
