Sugar Rush: SolMaya Brand Oatmeal Shake

Oatmeal is a beautiful thing. Even people who don't know my last name or anything else about me, know I am obsessed. So when Robyn found cans of the Avena Oatmeal Shake at Fine Fare, a grocery chain in New York and Jersey, I immediately interrogated her. Where was this land of oatmeal shakes? Cross streets? When would it close? Could I leave work now?

Spiked with cinnamon, and other spices that probably spend most of their time in pumpkin pies, this is more than you usually get from a can. Don't be confused. It's not oatmeal in a can. That would be weird. It's like a vanilla shake but with an oatmealy essence—you know, the taste of comfort, peace, new beginnings—minus any distinguishable oat flakes or lumps. These unassuming, pretty ugly cans sat on a special display in the canned foods aisle for 99 cents.

SolMaya, which specializes in Latin American dairy drinks with extended shelf lifes, also makes horchata and morir soñando (milk and orange juice).

Found at Fine Fare, and other markets containing Latin American products. We visited the location at 385 Broadway in Brooklyn. (map).

For photographic evidence of Erin's oatmeal worshipping, click here. It's the real deal. :)

I bought a case once for my factory worker. I figured it was a nice gift for them. Sure enough just about all of them said Solmaya brand was disgusting and some thought i was cruel for having them drink Solmaya brand oatmeal. I told them all that i was soo sorry and i gave them a raise. I felt so bad. I drank some of it just to see why they didn't like it.. I nearly gagged from it.. solmaya is gross..
