Rachel Maddow, Amateur Mixologist
"Hobby: 'I am a hobbyist bartender. I have a liquor cabinet. I research classic drinks from the golden age of American cocktails and I make them for me and Susan.' Favorite obscure liquor: 'Rhum agricole. It is rum made from sugar-cane juice rather than molasses. It is freaking awesome.'" —Rachel Maddow, pundit

Oh please.. not freaking Rachel Madcow.. do we have to have her intrude here?
I'm a liberal democrat, I assumed that I would enjoy her show on Air America, but I hated it. She's a moral relativist, and shallow... The MSM is bad enough, and they only prove my point by installing a left wing corporate whore, like herself on MSNBC.
Keith Olbermann,if your ratings have dropped, it's because heaps of us are boycotting the network since Madcow joined it's ranks.
Mares at 10:52PM on 10/20/08
@Mares: Methinks the intruder is the one calling the subject of this post vulgar names and making shrill, bitter accusations about political matters.
Back to potables and edibles, please.
How cool is that? I love considering how food and drink, like literature or fashion or any creative art, really, are products of time and place.
baboo at 12:53AM on 10/21/08
@Mares
I second baboo and guarantee you that Olbermann is not trolling serious eats for Nielson data on Maddow. Either tell me something worthwhile about rhum agricole or shut up.
BTW, the first thing a wingnut troll does when posing on a message board is drop the phrase "I'm a liberal democrat" and then proceed to say NOTHING liberal or Democratic. Cheers, you're outed!
EazyB at 10:22AM on 10/21/08
EazyB, I am a liberal democrat, the real kind.. you know, the ones who believe in social justice and civil rights.. not just pretend to, while rationalizing the subjugation and oppression of the poorest as Madcow does. Pull the stick out of your posterior, and grow up. ;)
Mares at 11:45AM on 10/21/08
@Mares
The next this a wingnut poseur does when caught in the act is continue their farce by throwing out some quick trite lines about civil rights to make it look like they're "hip" to actual left. Your characterizations of Maddow's actions are so discordant with anything I've ever heard her say that you have to be a nut job who's never actually listened to or watched either of her programs.
On top of all that, the hallmarks of the truly bat-shit crazy right-wing posters on a non-political site are: strong willingness to inject anti-left politics where there's no good cause and the abject cognitive dissonance to call people a "whore" and "Madcow", and tell others to pull things out of their anus while simultaneously claiming the high ground and demanding everyone else to "grow up".
Again, rhum agricole anyone...anyone?
EazyB at 12:10PM on 10/21/08
How is it different from Cachaça? Sounds very similar.
EazyB at 12:19PM on 10/21/08
Just thought I'd add a few details here.
Madcow has stated that she lives in the Pioneer Valley of Massachusetts (northwest portion of the state), an area that has been hard hit by the outsourcing of manufacturing (as well as tech) jobs for decades. No one who claims to be liberal, who lives there can dispute the fact that the poverty there is entrenched and dire. Homelessness is rampant, and it's hard to miss. Families especially are hardest hit, and there aren't enough services or resources for them to receive help from.
This is happening all across the country, to the point where real hunger, malnutrioun and anemia are pandemic, we have more poor citizens suffering from malnutrition and anemia than during the Great Depression and we are now seeing tent cities springing up across the US.
We have a declining pool of jobs, and it started in the 1980s, got worse under Clinton's pushing through NAFTA and the subsequent trade deals and back door deals that have come about under Shrub Bush. Plus we have the exploitation of our visa programs, and a rationale not to demand that Mexico honor the promises it made when it co-wrote NAFTA, to enact needed reforms to raise wages and increase opportunities for it's people by raising taxes on it's now large and thriving middle class, and many billion/millionaires. It's now the 14th wealthiest country in the world, with a housing boom and zero national debt. Instead, we have poverty in Mexico being exploited to bring about the dream of the US Chamber of Commerce and Business Roundtable; the eradication of the minimum wage (and all wage standards), workplace and environmental protections.
It's not just the republicans in the pockets of the corporate interests, thanks to McCain/Feingold's idiotic CFR legislation, it's the democratic party now as well.
I had high hopes for Air America Radio, but they were dashed by disconnected and disinterested, one trick ponies like Rachel Madcow, who could care less about poverty and oppression. She represents the sort of elites that we had when the democrats were the party of slavery. She has only ever discusssed above the glass ceiling issues.
I particularly remember listening to her show one day, several years back, when a caller requested that Madcow make poverty the main subject of discussion in a future program, referencing the suffering that was being felt in her community. I remember thinking it was a great idea, because AAR was supposed to be an opportunity for real representation of all the issues that the right wing talk radio liked to shoot down. Madcow, very defensively claimed that, while she of course "cared" about poverty, it wasn't the only issue that mattered to her. She NEVER discussed that issue before, and certainly did not after that. After that I listened to her less and less, as her show felt pretty much irrelevant to me.
I've seen her on cable news programs as a guest, and all she ever talks about are more frivolous issues, perhaps she might comment on the war, but that's about it. Not once has she ever even discussed the dire poverty in her own backyard. Perhaps that's because it creates the sort of conditions that allow her to imagine herself on some funky third world junket, where the exploited lend a picturesque and "vibrant" air, making every day like a vacation?
If my criticisms of Madcow aren't legit, why don't you point out an example of when she has ever commented substantively on the desperate poverty facing Americans? I'd be ever so happy to be proven wrong.
As to this twaddle of hers about Rhum agricole, it's produced based on the still to this day slavery that exists in Haiti, the Dominican Republic and in other former French colonies. Poor children in Haiti are often stolen or even sold to French or Dominican sugar plantations, and exploited as the same sort of cheap or free labor force Madcow has no problems with rationalizing here and elsewhere. I know "some" foodies like to spin Rhum agricole as an "agricultura" rum, implying pastoral.. but that's a misrepresentation. It's a plantation product, with all that plantation implies.

Jebus. I knew it was a mistake to even post anything about Maddow here. Lesson learned. :(
Adam Kuban at 12:31PM on 10/21/08
@Mares
Wow! I'll admit when I'm wrong. You are no bat-shit right winger, you're just bat-shit! Do you unload this much weird vendetta nonsense on pundits you've never met, but harbor a years old grudge against, on every site or just here?
EazyB at 12:31PM on 10/21/08
What's the matter? Reality not "freakin' awesome!" enought for you?
Mares at 12:31PM on 10/21/08
Oh. My. God. I turn off anytime someone uses cutesy names to make their point (don't get me started on "McSame").
Anyway, I'm a big Maddow fan and it's not a big surprise that she would enjoy a properly made cocktail since she comes across as very thoughtful and intelligent.
sloppy at 12:33PM on 10/21/08
Bat-shit, EazyB? You have a computer in front of you, the facts are easy enough to research for yourself.. but perhaps you don't care about poverty?
All you've proven is that so called "liberals" like your self are hypocrites and frauds, who wave around "liberal" like a banner, while in reality you are no different than the neo-cons who elected Bush.
Mares at 12:34PM on 10/21/08
Oh, don't worry about it. Make yourselves a big pitcher of "properly" made cocktails, go sit out on the verandah, and put on the soundtrack of Song of the South, and pat yourselves on the backs about how "thoughtful and intelligent" you are, while corrupt politicians, and media sell outs like Madcow dismantle your rights and freedoms.. and the only thing that trickles down is a regression back to the days of your ancestors, where virtually all of you will be returned to the third world wages and zero opportunities, that the truly thoughtful and intelligent among them fought so hard to achieve.
Mares at 12:45PM on 10/21/08
because that line of thinking led to such great results in 2000 and everyone who disagrees is racist and corrupt....
i'm out.
sloppy at 12:48PM on 10/21/08
oops, fought so hard to overcome. That's what I get for attempting to debate with the sort of morons who have their heads buried in the sand. Just like their parents who elected Reagan, Bush I, and II

I whole-heartedly agree.
EazyB at 12:50PM on 10/21/08
Actually, sloppy, your line of thinking lead to voting for Nader, who had stated that he would prefer the sort of scorched earth conditions and suffering that a Bush administration would bring about. I fought hard as a campaign volunteer for Al Gore's campaign. This election, I fought hard for the only candidate that cared about all the issues, John Edwards. This year, I don't know who I'm voting for, I might just write in John Edwards, because the two choices we have now are pretty much identical.
BTW, Air America Radio tanked to the anemic state it's in now, because elitist pigs like Madcow refused to report on the realities that it was supposed to. Alienating the wider audience it originally had.
Mares at 12:53PM on 10/21/08
@Adam: Please don't think you made a mistake with this post. You'll notice that only one commenter hijacked the topic and continued adding to his/her rant. You could easily solve this problem by removing and/or blocking this person's comments.
I thoroughly enjoy learning about the eating and drinking habits of people in the public eye. Thanks for your good work!

OK. This thread has pretty much taken the express track to Food-Unrelated Territory. I'm closing it, as it's not going to lead anywhere productive at this point.
