A Better Breakfast Sandwich at 'wichcraft

Last week, we weren’t too enthused about the Dunkin’ Donuts new line of breakfast sandwiches—rubbery triangles that landed firmly on the Do Not Want list. But never fear, New Yorkers! A better option is available to you. Tom Colicchio’s 'wichcraft, peddling pricey but artfully made lunches to hungry Manhattan office folk, has two fancy-pants breakfast sandwiches that don’t disappoint. The Onion Frittata and Fried Egg knock your daily streetcart sandwiches (or even McMuffins) out of the park.

The Taste Test: Onion Frittata

Oh, man. One bite and it’s hard to go back to the standard egg-and-bagel. A thick slice of steaming onion frittata, perfectly seasoned, moist and tender, topped with a tangy, spicy tomato sauce, hugged with two slices of sharp cheddar, melting into a soft ciabatta roll, crisp on the edges, warm to the touch… I’m sold.

Taste Test, Fried Egg:

Again—wow. The same tasty soft ciabatta hugs two butter-fried eggs with bacon, gorgonzola, and frisée. Though I’m not a gorgonzola girl, I loved it on this sandwich; it didn’t just melt, it liquefied, oozing into the roll and frisée like a warm salad dressing. The bacon was substantial, and crispy but still a little meaty. The eggs were carefully fried, though the yolks were firmly set—a little too hard for my taste. This is a salty, flavorful mouthful, and while I can’t imagine grabbing one to go at 7:00 AM, it’s an exciting brunch-time event.

Both decent-sized sandwiches, on two separate visits, were way too good not to finish (and delicately swipe the last drops of sauce from the plate). Those budgeting dollars or calories should take note: with 540 (egg) and 700 (frittata) calories, these aren't exactly diet food; and at $6.50 and $6.95, they're not a bargain breakfast, either. That said, they're as delicious breakfast sandwiches as I've ever had, and each one kept me going well through the morning and into the afternoon. Take that, flatbread!
