Sights and Sounds from the Big Apple Barbecue Block Party

20080609cw11video.jpg

The food porn from this weekend's Big Apple Barbecue Block Party has been pouring in since early Saturday afternoon, and if you missed it (or you just want to stare lovingly at your favorite plates of 'cue), there are plenty of options. Gothamist was one of the first to post a slideshow, as did Eater. Jason Perlow has photo and video coverage on Off the Broiler, Dave Cook from Eating in Translation was there, as was Food in Mouth; plus new Serious Eats grillmaster Josh Bousel has a great round up of the event on his blog The Meatwave.

But our totally biased favorite is this video put together by the CW11, featuring our very own Ed Levine talking about how great it is that one weekend a year these pit masters get to be treated like rock stars.

Were you there? What did you think?

Nice! Thanks Kathryn... you can never have enough food porn (IMHO)

I went on Sunday. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be in terms of the crowd, but maybe that's because we got there early. I was really interested in trying the Salt Lick.

We got the brisket. It was OK but not transcendent. Actually, I thought it was weird. At first it tasted good. Like a decent brisket. Then, about a third of the way through, it had a distinct motor oil flavor. I got through that and then came to a sort of barnyard/horse-stable flavor -- like hay and manure. I guess that in that respect, it represented Texas very well -- beef, oil, horses.

Really wanted to get an Ed Mitchell pulled pork, but after waiting around for Salt Lick in that heat, forget it.

I've found that Salt Lick tastes best if you find someone who's part of the crew and ask for the deckle.
