Ikea Hack: Free Ferry and Bus Service Will Give Easy Access to Red Hook Ball Field Vendors

20080516-ikeahackequation.png

The food-related buzz about the Red Hook Ikea in Brooklyn so far has been that the cafe there will serve "unspecified New York specialties" in addition to the usual meatball fare.

But the real story is this, ladies and gents: The Red Hook vendors will now be easily accessible from Manhattan via the Ikea Ferry.

Take the New York Water Taxi–Ikea Ferry to Red Hook; the soccer taco vendors are an easy couple blocks away.

Starting June 18, the ferry will run from Pier 11 in Lower Manhattan every 40 minutes during the hours of 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Operated by New York Water Taxi, the boat will run seven days a week, so you'll totally be able to hop that ship on weekends. (The soccer taco stands operate from roughly 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.)

The ride is free, and it's open to everyone, not just Ikea customers. The Red Hook Ikea store opens June 18, and the ferry holds 74 passengers.

Pier 11 is on the East River at the base of Wall Street; the nearest subway stations are:

  • R, W at Whitehall
  • 2, 3 at Wall Street
  • 1 at South Ferry
  • 4, 5 at Bowling Green

Though the heretofore isolated nature of the Red Hook ball fields hasn't deterred serious eaters, the new accessibility will open the deliciousness to more casual food fans. What's interesting to note, too, is that the Ikea Ferry could potentially give Staten Islanders easier access to the Red Hook vendors than some Manhattanites—and certainly easier access than Bronx and Queens residents, and even some Brooklynites.

The Ikea Shuttle Bus Hack

And the Ikea Ferry is not the only Ikea-sponsored transport that's hackable for taco-related purposes. The store will be running three free shuttle buses every 10 minutes that you can catch at the following subway stations:

  • Court Street–Borough Hall, Downtown Brooklyn
  • Smith–9th streets, Carroll Gardens
  • Fourth Avenue–9th Street, Park Slope/Gowanus

Public Transport

And for those pure of heart who don't want to mooch off Ikea, the MTA has also extended the B61 and B77 bus routes to run to "Ikea Terminal." That should put you right near the soccer tacos, folks.

I love IKEA Hacks--however, this is the most brilliant and so thorough.

HAHA I love the images, it's like: "Destination Taco" or some crazy adventure to find the magical taco. Taco's are magical!

On weekends, Ikea offers a free bus from Port Authority to the Elizabeth, New Jersey branch. I've done it a few times, and always gazed longingly across the Jersey Turnpike - to Newark Airport. It could be a free ride to the airport, but you kinda have to dodge eight lanes of traffic.

Don't forget about the farmers' market at the Red Hook farm/Added Value on Saturdays! It's directly across the street from Ikea, you can even see it in the Google map posted above.

So now you can pick up an Expedit bookcase, fresh locally grown vegetables and a yummy taco all in ONE trip. sweet.

I love you but I hate you. This means I need to get to Red Hook even earlier to beat the line at Lainez Salvadoran. Love me some pupusas.

You guys have no idea how confusing this is, to a guy from Texas, who's never been to New York. It's like another world.

Ok, so IKEA does more than make the desk in my den?

They make meatballs too? IKEA meatballs?

And they have a full blown restaurant inside the furniture store?

And boats? They have boats? .... IKEA boats?

Tremendous marketing at its best. I love IKEA. It should stand for "Its Keeping Excitement Alive", or better yet, "It Keeps Entertaining Alive".

Or, better yet, IKEA = "It Keeps Entertaining Alive", or Alluring.

@fastfoodcritic: Have you never been to an Ikea? If not, how did you get the desk? Yes, there are cafes inside Ikeas. They're known for the meatball dish. And you can buy bags of frozen meatballs.

@Adam: We ordered online and had it shipped.

I've never been inside an IKEA store. And this is the first IKEA product we've ever purchased from them. It's nice, btw. Simple and sturdy.

I knew about the Swedish origins of the company. But I didn't know they had cafes inside,or that you can purchase bags of frozen meatballs there! Haha... that's awesome. It's also funny to a IKEA noob like myself.

How about IKEA = It Keeps Eating Awesome ? :)

Now, can anyone point me to where exactly said food vendors are? Because i took a walking tour of Red Hook last summer, came across a park (probably Red Hook Park on the map above) and never managed to find the ball fields. And on the map, said ball fields look like they span 10 blocks, so.... where's the FOOD???

Food is on the corner of Bay and Clinton, according to Porkchop Express. I've never been sure of the streets, as I've just found them by wandering around, myself. mh330: Did you go on a weekend? I don't think they're there on weekdays.

FastFood Critic: Ikea does make boats, but they are shoddy and flimsy. You can usually find an old beat up one the sidewalk on garbage day. Can't beat that lingonberry drink, though.

I wonder what is going to be worse eating Ikea's smelly swedish meatballs or having your brand new couch put together fall apart in a week or going on the Ikea boat leaving the store with each person with fifty bags a boat that holds 74 people, what a stupid idea.
