Hungry? $1 Jumbo Hot Dogs in Chinatown
Most people cite Gray's Papaya for good hot dogs, but if you're looking for more bang for your buck, your best bet is in Chinatown at Jumbo Hot Dog, where you can get a filling hot dog for 92¢ ($1 once you add tax). Cheap Ass Food crunched some numbers for comparison on their last visit: Gray's dogs are 5 inches in length and 5/8 inches in diameter, while this quarter-pound jumbo wiener clocks in at 6 inches and 1.25 inches in diameter. Onions, relish, and sauerkraut cost an extra 25¢ each. Our man Ed Levine stopped by two years ago and wasn't too crazy about them. Perhaps it's time for a second visit, Ed?

One dollar for a quarter pound hot dog is unheard of. The frank served is from Best Provisions and is the finest beef dog I've sampled. I do prefer a natural casing. And I like the dog prepared on a grill or flat griddle rather than a roller grill, which is how they do it here.
There was a place in New Jersey (now gone) called Syd's that served the finest dog anywhere. It was a long, thin 5 to a lb Best dog with natural casing. It was boiled, then chargrilled. The perfect size, snap, and flavor. This same dog is still being made by Best. You can get it at Jimmy Buff's in East Hanover, Seymours Luncheonette in Livingston, Bubba's in Lyndhurst, and as of next week it will be served at the popular Martini Bar in Millburn.
