Is "Liquid Center" supposed to be a warning? (Photographs by Robyn Lee)

Walking through Midtown the other day, I thought I'd stop into Macchiato Espresso Bar for a snack, after noticing this on their list of desserts: "Pocket Coffee (go ahead and ask...)" For $1, how could I not?

Delicious Italian chocolate, made by Ferrero (the same company that makes Rocher and Nutella), filled with delicious Italian espresso- and not some espresso flavored syrup, but actual espresso. Despite being told by the lady who sold it to me to eat it in one bite, we decided to take our chances, and see what was going on inside (we're crazy like that here at Serious Eats: New York.)

The "Liquid Center" after the jump...

Oh. My. God.

$1 each?! You can get a whole box of them at germandeli.com

I love these. They are delicious AND they keep me up in math class!

Trader Joe's has a knock-off version, for those of you who can't find a deli nearby or don't want to order off the internet.

$1?! I mean, I love Pocket Coffee but perhaps not at that price.

@ cybele - Funny you should mention the Trader Joe's version... a friend of mine who works at Martha Stewart Radio on Sirius said they did an office taste of the two (side by side) and Pocket Coffee won, hands down.

$1 is a ridiculous ripoff. You can get 5 of these for $2 here in Pittsburgh (@ PennMac in the Strip District).

But, these *are* delicious!

Zach - oh, I'm not saying the TJs is better, but if you can't get a hold of the Pocket Coffee, it's a pleasant simulation.

*sigh* that's Midtown Manhattan prices for you... and I'm well aware that you can order them online for cheaper, but that takes a lot of foresight! something that is very elusive when i need my afternoon sugar/coffee fix. :-)

Um...how is west 10th st. in midtown? Are you talking about the place on 44th?

@Liz NYC - you are so right! I don't know how that address got in there... I updated it. It's the place on 44th btw. Lexington & 3rd.

I *love* these! I got hooked on them this past semester. But yes, Midtown Manhattan will kill your wallet. Stock up outside the city =)

yaaa we don't have these in France, but I keep seeing them when I travel to Italy (actually when I'm in Italy I "discover" the entire Ferrero kingdom of products lol). Always been tempted to buy one, but never have for some reason... thanks for this post!!
