Valentine's Day Chocolate Options: Upper West Side
There's never been a better time to be a chocolate lover on the Upper West Side. Just look at the chocolate purchasing options available from Columbus Circle to Columbia University:
Bouchon Bakery: Yes, this collection of molded chocolates and bonbons is going to be crazy expensive, but according to fellow serious eater Raphael, they are also crazy good. You'll have to take his word for it, because he and the other serious eaters finished the entire box while I was away for one lousy day.
Address: 10 Columbus Circle (Broadway and 60th St., 3rd fl.)

Jacques Torres: His website is mrchocolate.com, so the man must know from chocolate (and he does). Torres' chocolate is not as expensive or as good as, say Maison du Chocolat, but it's still plenty satisfying. His malted milk balls are addictive, and enough's been said about his intense hot chocolate.
Address: 285 Amsterdam Avenue (bet. 73rd and 74th Sts.)
Phone: 212-414-2462
Neuhaus Chocolate: Not my favorite high-end Belgian chocolate, but plenty good all the same. Insanely expensive (somebody has to pay for all that jet fuel)
Address: 2151 Broadway (bet. 75th and 76th Sts.)
Phone: 212-712-2112
Scharffen Berger Berger Chocolate Maker: There's been a lot of grumbling about Scharffenberg's quality going down after Hershey's bought them, but I haven't seen any significant drop-off in quality.
Address: 473 Amsterdam Ave. (bet. 83rd and 84th Sts.)
Phone: 212-362-9734
Mondel's Chocolates: The buttercrunch here is a beautiful thing.
Address: 2913 Broadway (114th Street)
Phone: 212-864-2111

Teuscher is simply the best. Although not on the UWS, worth the trip (25 E. 61 St.)

Teuscher is excellent. I'm going to do round-ups for other neighborhoods in the coming days. Stay tuned.

Hooray for Mondel's! I live right around the corner, and whenever I'm blue just walking in and breathing the chocolate-y air will pick me up.
Their buttercrunch IS good, but don't miss the dark chocolate covered ginger--the ginger is a toothsome sort of jelly, and not at all too sweet; combined with the dark chocolate it's a bite of heaven. Whenever I pick up chocolates to take to a dinner party, I always buy a little sidebag of these for myself, just to whet my appetite!
