Great Pork at Ceriello's

On my way back to the office from a meeting I stopped at the Ceriello Fine Foods counter at the Market at the Grand Central Terminal (which has quietly become one of the best food shopping destinations in New York). I ordered two pre-stuffed Berkshire pork roasts, one with the bones in, the other boneless. They were stuffed with some combination of spinach, prosciutto, mozzarella, Pecorino Romano, and I think, strangely enough, it said filet mignon (I looked on the website, which is so poorly organized I couldn't find anything about what I bought). They both looked gorgeous: the meat was dark red and beautifully marbled, which is what you look for in heritage pork.

I served them both to our friends Joan and Tom on Saturday night, and even though I overcooked them, both roasts were crazy good, porky and moist and deeply satisfying in the way only pork can be. Joan said she had been lamenting her lack of a go-to butcher for pork. Now, I told her, we both have one.

I also want to know more about Ceriello's. They have stores in Long Island, Manhattan, New Jersey, Baltimore, Milwaukee, Virginia, and coming soon, Memphis. These guys clearly have big plans.

Ceriello's also has great rib-eye steaks. It is a fine butcher and easy to underestimate because of its lack of Manhattan reputation before it located at Grand Central. I don't find the butchers there to be flexible about preparing anything special while I wait, but the prepared cuts are excellent.
