Best Birthday Cake Toppings (for Our Friends at Eater)

Thanks to our friends at Eater, I've spent the morning contemplating my fourteen favorite birthday cake toppings, fillings, and frostings in New York. I've even added one more for good measure. Think of the fifteenth as the cherry on top. These are for you, Ben Leventhal.

From Soutine:

1. Concord: Two layers of chocolate meringue, filled with chocolate mousse
2. Chestnut Torte: Chestnut cake filled and frosted with chocolate whipped cream
3. Mousse Cake: Chocolate cake filled with mousse and glazed with chocolate
4. Strawberry/Raspberry Shortcake: White cake, whipped cream, and
fresh berries
5. White Cake: Filled with Raspberry Jam and frosted with Lemon Buttercream
6. Chocolate Cake: Filled with apricot preserves, frosted and glazed with chocolate
7. Carrot Cake: Made with cream cheese frosting

From Two Little Red Hens:

8. White (a white vanilla butter cake) with Chocolate Hazelnut Ganache
9. Orange (butter cake w/ fresh orange juice & orange zest) with Lemon Curd
10. Mocha Chiffon (soft, velvety chocolate cake) with Chocolate Pudding
11. Marble (yellow & dark chocolate combined) with Chocolate Mousse
12. Banana (moist with fresh bananas, no nuts) with Whipped Cream
13. Vanilla Genoise (lightly soaked vanilla sponge) with Raspberry Jam
14. Almond Genoise with Apricot Puree
15. Red Velvet (deep red & moist with a hint of cocoa) with vanilla buttercream

3 Comments:

The cake we're enjoying tonight combines two of these: Red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting.

Oh...I would happily eat any one of the above :)

Best... Post... Ever.
