Tasting Notes From the Day After Thanksgiving
Tasting Notes from Yesterday:
I can't give you a report from the Burger Joint at the Parker-Meridian. The line was insanely long. The burgers there are good, but they're not that good, and the fries are nothing special at all. Plus, you can't even get a shake at peak serving times (which I assume yesterday at 1:45 p.m. was).
I ended up having a generic chicken on pita from a cart on 55th and 6th. The dry chicken was rescued by the white sauce. I've decided the mayonnaisey white sauce is the key to chicken on pita satisfaction.
We tried every pie Anthony Mangieri makes at Una Pizza Napoletana. My pizza-touring chef friends were blown away. As well they should have been. Anthony Mangieri is at the top of his game these days. Note to all serious eaters: Go have pizza at Una Pizza Napoletana.
There must be a brisket shortage in New York. Neither Fairway nor Citarella had any brisket to sell me for my family's pre-Chanukah Chanukah party. If the shortage persists, there will be panic on the Upper West Side come the actual Chanukah days.

Since you brought up Chanukah, do you have any favorite places to buy potato pancakes?

Hanukkah comes so early this year..wasn't Thanksgiving your pre-Hanukkah party? I will be needing a brisket shortly but will probably get mine at the Green Market. Maybe I ought to buy it this week in light of this shortage.. Do people buy it for Thanksgiving?

Potato pancakes are something I usually make, but I do like the potato pancakes at Teresa's on first avenue.

Izzy's mama, I think the brisket shortage was just a one day aberration. There were briskets for sale at Citarella this morning. I honest can't tell you why both Citarella and Fairway didn't have any brisket yesterday. We had our Hanukkah party today because my nieces were in from California for Thanksgiving, and they weren't going to be coming back to NY again this year. So, we had our Hanukkah party today.

Ed, you missed the best old school diner burger in the city right across the street at Astro Diner (55th & 6th)....these diners are a dieing breed, this one is classic, try one next time.....

Thanks Ed. Each year I tell myself I will make them, but it hasn't happened yet. Maybe this will be the year, but it is nice to have an option just in case.
