Best Coffee Bars in New York: Add Your Favorite
Seth Kugel plugs into New York's best coffee bars. Add this to Peter Meehan's picks from a year ago (the first four of the following guide) and you have a pretty comprehensive list of where to get a serious cup of joe in New York. Ed, I would change that headline. To me, a coffee shop is where you get a great grilled cheese or a tuna on rye or a cheese danish. A coffee bar, which is what the article is about, is a different animal altogether.

Never been a fan of Mud's blend -- not dark enough for me. I like to go to Porto Rico across the street instead. Also, where is the Roasting Plant on this list? Abraco, which just opened in the East Village, is also good. Think Coffee in Noho. Jack's Stir Brewed and Grey Dog in the West Village.

And whatever happened to the coffee house? A place for discussion, not sitting listening to your iPod and playing with your laptop. Alas!

Excellent list, Kathryn. I'll add them to the map when I get into the office if I can.

we have discovered an invitation only coffee bar for select clientele at 200 varick. the beans are roasted locally on a daily basis by an eccentric coffee connoisseur. the selections include the likes of Costa Rica
Tarrazu - La Minita, Guatemalan Acatenango - Buena Vista Gesha and Ethiopia Org. Sidamo DP -Special Selection. each order is prepared in a vacuum pot over and open flame. the milk is then pre-warmed in a Bain-Marie and served with raw sugar.
can you say DELICIOUS???

The Joe's at the Alessi gallery in SoHo deserves a separate mention - you get your perfect latte in an Alessi cup, with an Alessi spoon(!)
Also, Abraco is fantastic, and the nearby Tarallucci e Vino (1st Ave/10th st) is quite good too.

I walk out of my way each morning to 13th Street between 3rd and 4th Avenue for Everyman Espresso; literally around the block from Starbucks (yuck). Everyman has the absolute creamiest Latte I have ever had and they just started Single Origin coffee that's really yummy as well.

I really dig Klatch in the Financial District.. it's on 9 Maiden Lane, btw Broad and Nassau.
Also like 71 Irving on Irving btw 18 and 19th... good food as well as good coffee..
Less of a bar, but good cafe: Oren's various spots around the city.

Ditto on the above comment about Klatch. Used to go there almost
every day for my morning coffee when I worked nearby. They serve
local Porto Rico coffee (unless that has changed) and local pastries/
snacks from various places. The owner and staff were always really
nice too.

We just tried the coffee at The Roasting Plant and it is outstanding. They grind the beans and brew each coffee individually, and they use some sort of pressurized process that creates crema on the surface of each cup of coffee, just like espresso. The flavor is smooth and delicious with no bitterness. The only drawback is that it’s a takeout place with only a few seats and it is located on the Lower East Side, which is not at all convenient for us.
