Dear Ed: Porter House New York

Dear Ed,

Thanks for introducing me to Michael Lomanaco and Porter House New York. Amy and I ate there last night. Our dinner was as special as you promised it would be, and Michael was the consummate chef-host.

Walking home, it occurred to me that it might be interesting for the Serious Eats community to know what it’s like to live in the same building as New York’s most serious eater, Ed Levine.

In a word: lucky.

Since Amy, the kids, and I moved in four years ago, you have shared your knowledge and enthusiasm for amazing tastes, but more important, you’ve actually shared the tastes. You have called us down to your apartment to try pizza from Pizzeria Bianco, pork shoulder from Big Bob Gibson, ribs from 17th Street Bar & Grill. When you were sampling the best chicken soups in New York, we were sampling the best chicken soups in New York. When Anthony Mangieri opened Una Pizza Napoletana, when David Chang opened Momofuku, you told us early, and we all went before there were any lines. And then went again and again.

One of the reasons I was so excited that you launched Serious Eats is that it’s a great forum for you to let everyone in all the wonderful stuff you find, not just your neighbors. Another reason: Even more outrageous food coming to our building from even more outrageous places.

Call anytime. I’m only an elevator ride away.

Best,
Brian

Hmph. Where were we when all these mailed-in goodies were being sampled, Ed?

[Just hosing you, Mr. L. You did bring me those good steaks to grill...Nice post, Brian!]

Pointless post. Get a grip on your ego, Ed.

Dear Ed,

I live in your neighborhood. Can I be your friend?

Sara
