The Peach Custard at Shake Shack Rocks!

20070719custard.jpgI know it's kind of fashionable to trash Shake Shack these days, but last Wednesday I had an incredibly delicious cup of peach frozen custard. I waited less than 30 seconds in the "B-Line" and took my cup of perfect custard to the southeast corner of Madison Square Park, where British soul singer James Hunter was giving a free concert.

Peach custard, no waiting, free James Hunter concert: Life was good. Peach is the Wednesday flavor of the day at the Shake Shack, at least for July, so consider hitting the B-Line tomorrow. I may hit the Shack next Monday for the salted caramel frozen custard. Doesn't that sound just perfect?

Of course, when I obsess about frozen custard, I start thinking about doing a frozen custard taste test. I'm thinking about ordering some Kopp's online from Milwaukee and then taking it over to Shake Shack for a direct comparison.

What's your favorite frozen custard anywhere? No soft ice creams like Carvel need apply.

Ted Drewes in St. Louis is the standard for frozen custard (the thickest concretes that can be held upside down), and East Coast in Cleveland comes pretty close.

You needn't mail-order any custard, Ed. Kopp's would win. Or Leon's. Both are from Milwaukee, located, let us not forget, in the Dairy State. Milwaukee frozen custard know-how trumps any Big Apple–based custard that's modeled on Saint Louis–based Ted Drewes.

This is the truth, and the truth is a cold, rich, and creamy mistress. ;)

I (sadly) haven't had a chance to try the Milwaukee or Buffalo custards, but Carl's in Fredericksburg, VA was stellar.

I enjoy the Shack's custard but I have one quibble: I wish they would either add a flavor or take one away, so that the flavors staggered days of the week. I tend to splurge (calorically) on Fridays, and it's a bummer that every Friday they have the same flavor.

That sounds YUMMY.

Sandy's on Barton Springs Rd. in Austin, Texas, a walk-up window burger joint, even when I was 5 years old in 1980, going to Sandy's felt like walking into a time warp. Straight vanilla and chocolate, maybe have a flavor now and then, but I never got one. The only place I know in Austin still serving frozen custard. I grew up on their sweet and creamy soft cones as a treat for doing unpleasant chores and I still love that vanilla.

My favorite is Kamm's Custard Shop at the historic Grove Arcade in Asheville, NC. They have an amazing array of freshly-made flavors, plus they will blend two together on request. I usually stick to their wonderful vanilla, which somehow surpasses the idealized memories of eating frozen custard on the Jersey Shore when I was a kid. Anyone know if Kohr's is still in business? Anyhow, if you're visiting the Blue Ridge Mountains, make sure you visit Kamm's.

ted drewes rules all frozen custard. I've tried everything in milwaukee, but nothing compares to ted's creamy goodness.

I can't say that I've had frozen custard in too many places but my favorite is Abbott's in the Rochester, NY area. I was there for a summer internship a few years ago and was constantly craving it.

Blah, blah, blah, crazy non-NYC custards... but I'm a total Shake Shack custard junkie. Peach is wonderful, but I wasn't actually such a fan of the Salted Caramel; it just tasted like a run of the mill caramel to me. The Candied Pecan Swirl on Tuesdays is another great one, though.

This topic really sux as there is no frozen custard in San Francisco...wahhh, I want some East Coast custard(Cleveland) and I want it now! Only 43 days and 4 hours until I can have some. My first stop when I visit family in Cleveland, the second is to a real Jewish style deli another thing missing in San Francisco. But you can't beat the weather or the food scene here.

i really, really miss custard beach!!! does anyone in new york remember them? i used to go to school near 8th street and broadway and would stop in there almost every day.

Nothing compares to Milwaukee frozen custard. Kopp's is best for chocolate, Leon's for vanilla. My childhood fave was always the fudgemellowmint sundae at Gilly's... oh man, why did I move to California, that land of crappy desserts?
